Stop Press – Desperate times.

I had intended to leave the post, ‘Strange but True’ up for a few days before posting again.  But I need to get a message out on my blog in the hopes that someone out there sees it and can help.  Along with a lot of people, I’m in a bit of bind financially speaking, well actually, in a bind generally speaking too, but the financial issue is now so pressing it’s not funny.

I am not in the best position to take on any jobs since I have The Other who is ill and now have The Elder Teen home who needs a certain amount of investment to get him up and running with a job of his own.  I’ve been off to two local interviews which I would have moved heaven and earth to accomodate, but neither job was offered to me.  So I have assessed things and concluded that while I find an appropriate job that is not too far from home and that I can fit in with the demands of the family, I need to have some ‘home’ work.  I have already looked on the internet and am finding it hard to find any genuine ‘work at home jobs’ – lots of them are just scams and time wasters or don’t pay cash, (you can’t eat air miles).  I have thought about what I can offer.  Other than stuffing envelopes and other such work sometimes handed out to people like me, (which I am willing to do, but can’t find) I can offer the following.

I have a computer with internet and a telephone, a scanner and printer, a digital camera.

I can type – fast and write reasonably well.  For example, I can write  descriptive blurb for catalogues or items for sale, I can write articles or copy writing.

I can prepare CV’s.

I can proof read.

I am an excellent letter writer.

I can transcribe and audio type.

I can write up notes.

I can type up students or teachers/professors’ notes.

In short, I can provide a secretarial service in a virtual way.  I am a Virtual Assistant.

I am willing and able and just a bit desperate.

I can stuff envelopes and lick stamps.

Benefits of a Virtual Assistant

I can start immediately, I will not be too expensive.

You will have none of the usual expenses that occur when employing someone on site.  And there are a lot of expenses.  You need only use me when you need me, with no other obligations.

If any readers out there, have any work for me or can either pass on my request for work, think of anyone they know that may need this type of service, ask their colleagues if they are interested, ask their wives and husbands; please, please, please do so.

Thank you.

P.S.  I have done work at home jobs before, one of which was soldering wires onto a circuit board, so I am quite flexible!

  1. I too am unemployed, and it’s a less than fantastic feeling. You could try posting your request on craigslist.com. And I’ll pass on the word.

  2. Hey thanks Oktober Five, much appreciated!

  3. You are not alone in these hard times. I too have searched for work at home jobs and finally just gave up. I think we need to do what you are doing, just reach out and create our own opportunity. Search for new places, new people and you just might find new ideas.

  4. Hi Julian,
Thanks. It’s so disheartening when you search for ‘home’ jobs and find they are yet another scam. Some of them sound genuine, but there’s always a catch or you have to pay for some database acess of companies who ‘are crying out’ for your services. Yea right!

    It’s depressing!

  5. Can’t help job wise sorry.

Things to think about, have you a farmers market or local market, if so can you bake cookies or even cakes. Do you craft in any way, this way you might make something.

The other thing and I know this is personal but are you claiming all you can benefit wise. Citizans advice bureau would help there. If your husband is so disabled that he won’t work again claim DLA. Maybe you already have, write to me privately if you wish.

  6. Thanks Lynette,
Yes he gets some sort of disability allowance, but it is so tiny and now that The Teen is 18 and out of education, it’s been cut along with the child benefit.

I’m so reluctant to take benefits. It doesn’t feel right and I find it uncomfortable. I also always think I’ll get another job anytime soon, so I haven’t looked into any further help. It’s so demeaning and I’m very willing to work, I just need to find something! It also takes ages to process any benefits and I would expect to have got something before that time, but it is a vicious circle at the moment.

I thought with the all the financial problems, companies might like to outsource work rather take on someone permanent, again, it’s finding the work!

  7. Sorry to hear your cry for help and I wish I could offer you something. I’ve just come back from delivering junk mail would you believe. As you say… desperate times!

  8. Too right SAHH, I’m pretty much willing to do anything, just need to find it!!

  9. Your hubby is entitled to benefits whether you work or not. If he is unabel to go out the house and is dependant on you I would talk to CAB and see if you are eligle for extra income. This is what we pay our taxes for, I know some people abuse the system but the genuine cases really need to apply for help. He should get incapacity (long term), disabled living allowance, and possible attendance allowance also maybe eligle for motability. Please don’t try to just soldier on.

  10. I agree about so many of these jobs being scams….. I can’t offer you anything but GOOD LUCK!!

  11. Damnit. So many good people struggling to get by.

If I get even the faintest sniff of someone needing the services you describe I’ll be sure to send them your way.

You’re actively looking and keeping a positive mindset – that sort of approach will be rewarded. It will.

    Dave :)

  12. Dave, thanks for the support. Times are very tough for everyone and I should have got on the case of finding work ages ago! Now there are dozens of applicants for every job – stiff competition. Fingers crossed something comes along soon. Thanks again.

  13. Scribbles, I wish you all the very best in these lean times, we’re all trying desperately hard to adapt in any way that we can, it ain’t funny is it ? x

  14. Hi Sally, thanks for visiting. I really think the banks should stop all charges on private accounts in such difficult times, it would help a lot not to keep incurring ludicrous charges way out of proportion to the overdraft! But banks aren’t very honourable are they?!

  15. I was reading the newspaper today and saw and advertisment, the title being ‘Mony Worries’ and of course it caught my eye.

It was an ad for Proof Readers and the pay was quite good (on an hourly rate).

I have to admit that I’m tempted to look into it.

I don’t know if the big publishing houses where you are have anything in that line, but it might be worth looking into?

    :)

  16. Hi Dave, thanks for that. I’ve spent the last week searching for something. the local job paper last week was one page, one side only, whereas it is usually several pages of jobs. It’s quite worrying really as I don’t think we are at the worst of the financial crisis yet. 60,000 jobs have been lost in my area in recent weeks and soon there’ll be far too many after the few jobs going. That’s the case everywhere of course but it is a worry. I’ll check out the proof reading which is something I’d like to do. Really appreciate your help:)!

  17. Hi there
You left me a comment on my blog the other week and am finally coming over to your place! Sorry it;’s taken me a while.
I am sorry to read of your woes. It is a terrible time for so many of us and we have tightened our belt considerably.
have you tried these two sites?
    http://jobs.problogger.net
    http://www.workingmums.co.uk
    Good luck

  18. Hey Mom/Mum nice to see you hear. Sorry you’ve dropped by at such a bad time! I’ve been totally unable to write recently with such a miserable time. I have looked into the sites, but so many of the ‘work at home’ ones are either scams or you have to pay for information. The pro-blogging ones might be better. Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated!

  19. Scribbles. my pleasure. I’m still thinking hard. If it comes to me I’ll be right here with the suggestion. :)

  20. Thanks again everyone, is very heartening to have such kind support :)

  21. [...] has written about the kind of work she is looking for and goes on to describe her [...]

  22. IT may not help put food on the table – but I love my local freecycle group. I’ve found clothes for my kiddos at times I needed them. IT’s a great community of giving and recieving.

Sounds like you’re in the UK and here’s the link for the UK groups. http://www.freecycle.org/group/UK/

  23. Ok – one more thought. I’ve done a bit of work with a RPG (role playing game) company. (Did some work after pitching a product to a company. Doesn’t pay my bills but it does bring in a little income.) Dunno if you’re intrested. But there’s postings for writers here – http://www.enworld.org/forum/vbclassified.php?do=category&categoryid=4

  24. Avlor thanks for the ideas above and for stopping by here. One thing that is really nice, is how many kind thoughts and suggestions people have left for me. I really appreciate every one of them. I’ll check out the above site for writers, which is what I really want to do. Thanks to everyone!!

  25. Hi,

I came here through Dave Fowler’s site. Do you use Twitter? Well, anyway I have over 600 followers and I just sent out a message to this post so maybe someone will read it and contact you :-)

Have you tried any of the freelance bidding sites? A lot of the work is for programmers but there is work for VA’s too. The downside is that you bid on the job and the site takes a % if you get the job. Some just $5 and others 15%. I don’t use them too often but I do when I need some extra cash.

    getafreelancer.com
    scriptlance.com
    rentacoder.com

I’ve had the best luck with RentACoder but getafreelancer probably has the most listings.

    Kim

  26. Hi Kim,
Thanks so much for putting out the call on twitter and for the links which I haven’t come across. I’ll check them out right now. Very much appreciated indeed! It’s really lovely to have people being so thoughtful to me.

  27. I wish I had better advice than what was given, but I am also looking for work. I hope things work out for you soon.
